A course for healthcare assistants who are new to working in general practice. This course is suitable for those who are new to the role of HCA as well as HCAs who are making the transition to working as an HCA in general practice.
The course is accredited by the CPD Certification Service and aligned with the Care Certificate Standards for HCAs. It consists of 5 study days, which will be held at EQUIP's training rooms in Witham. The course will cover the role of the HCA in general practice, relevant clinical skills (BP, pulse, ECG, peak flow, capillary blood sampling, urinalysis, body mass index, waist measurement) as well as an overview of long term conditions (hypertension, coronary heart disease, respiratory disease and diabetes). Students also require a period of supervised practice with a nurse mentor until competency in the clinical skills is achieved.
Students are then required to complete written work and a competency assessment package that demonstrates that they have met the learning outcomes. The written assignments must be typed and submitted online to the course tutor so an appropriate competency in IT is required to undertake this course.
It is important to note that students need to have had the Hepatitis B vaccination before the start of the course and are required to work at least 10-12 hours a week as an HCA to complete the practical competencies.
All 5 study days must be attended to complete the course.
The course covers 12 of the 15 Care Certificate Standards:
