This 2 day course for Registered healthcare professionals, covers all Best Practice elements from assessment of arterial and vascular disease, diagnosis, choice of hosiery and application of compression/hosiery and will include a practical element.
- Signs of Venous Disease vs Signs of Arterial Disease – when to compress and when not to compress, as well as when to refer onwards.
- Why compression therapy works - the theory behind compression therapy.
- First line compression therapy in primary care - What GP surgeries can achieve for patients whilst awaiting referral to leg ulcer clinics. This aims to reduce appointments and giving patients best practice treatment in this time, including safe levels of compression which can be applied without a doppler.
- Atypical leg ulcers – what else could these wounds be if not a leg ulcer?
- Wound care in relation to leg ulcers.
- The importance of skin care – information around varicose eczema/red leg syndrome.
- Introduce to national/best practice documents around the national wound care strategy and Wounds UK best practice statements. To enable primary care staff to base their work on these.
- Measuring for compression Hosiery and which to choose including the discussion of the Wounds UK best practice statement for hosiery.
Following the course delegates will be required to undergo a period of shadowing and supervised practice with a clinical mentor - a competency assessment package will be provided.
