About

This is a two day childhood and adult immunisation foundation training course which follows the National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Vaccination Training. Regardless of where they are in the UK, every patient deserves immunisation care founded on consistent standards. The training ensures research based policy, national guidance and patient centred care is at the heart of the learning.

All delegates are required to work alongside an experienced mentorĀ  (who must be a registered professional e.g. Nurse, GP, Paramedic) to ensure you have supervision and support in clinical practice. To complete the training course, each student must complete a competency assessment.

Delegates should have attended basic life support and anaphylaxis training within 13 months prior to the training.

The training will follow theĀ  Core Areas of Immunisation Knowledge:

  • The aims of immunisation, national vaccine policy and schedules
  • The immune response to vaccines and how vaccines work
  • Vaccine preventable diseases
  • The different types of vaccines, their composition and the indications and
    contraindications
  • Current issues in immunisation
  • Communicating with patients, parents and carers about vaccines
  • Legal issues in immunisation
  • Storage and handling of vaccines
  • Correct administration of vaccines
  • Anaphylaxis and adverse reactions
  • Documentation, record keeping and reporting
  • Strategies for optimising immunisation uptake

 

About the Trainer

Joanna Lowry

Joanna Lowry

Jo began her career in Emergency Medicine, developing a passion for malaria prevention after treating severely ill travelers. In 2002, she earned a Diploma in Tropical Nursing from The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Specializing in Travel Health, she has helped people explore the world, working in London and for The Travel Doctor New Zealand. In 2005, Jo co-founded Winchester Travel Health, managing it until 2016 before stepping back to focus on her family. Her diverse clinical experience spans GP practices, boarding schools, sexual health, and TB nursing, giving her deep insight into these roles' challenges. Passionate about training, Jo enjoys fostering interest in preventive health care and tailoring her teaching to individual learners. A former Associate Trainer for NATHNAC (Public Health England), she has provided national Yellow Fever Immunisation Training and conducted sessions for pharmaceutical companies. Jo particularly loves teaching small groups, inspiring those new to travel health to explore this unique specialty.
