About

This RCN-accredited and CPD-accredited cervical screening (cytology) update is designed for healthcare professionals who are already trained and competent in cervical sample taking and require an update in line with current national guidance.

Facilitated by an experienced clinician, this interactive session provides a comprehensive theoretical update aligned with the NHS Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP) requirements.

Course Content

The update will include:

  • A refresher on the NHS Cervical Screening Programme, including recent developments and changes
  • Identification of common gynaecological conditions that may impact screening, including when to refer
  • Recognition of patient groups requiring individualised care
  • Discussion of professional, ethical and legal considerations in cervical screening
  • Review of failsafe procedures, including results management, ceasing/deferring screening, and audit processes
  • Updates on future developments and innovations within the screening programme
  • A clear, practical update on HPV, including its role in screening and patient outcomes
  • Best practice in sample taking, including infection control, consent, health and safety, and troubleshooting challenges

This course is suitable for registered healthcare professionals who are already trained in cervical sample taking, including:

Please note: Attendees must have completed recognised cervical sample taker training prior to attending this update.

Pre-Course Requirements

In line with NHSCSP guidance, participants are expected to have:

  • Completed audit of 20 consecutive cervical samples, including reflection on practice and inadequate sample rates

This course is RCN accredited by BBO Training Ltd delivered in partnership with Essex EQUIP.

RCN Accredited until 17th March 2027
