As we live longer, dementia is emerging as one of the leading causes of death and mortality globally (WHO 2023). Having an awareness of the disease and knowing how to support and care for patients is an essential skill for any health care provider and this half-day training course offers an introduction to Dementia to support the learning.
Throughout the session discussion will focus on the types of dementia, diagnosis and management, with a focus on care for both the patient and family in support. Following the session there will be a greater awareness of the disease, with practical tools to aid the consultation.
Aims and Objectives
Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the types of Dementia and how they impact upon people.
With reference to the Mental Capacity Act, understand the issues relating to informed consent & act as an advocate where applicable.
Undertake assessment of changes with compassion and report to the doctor / nurse.
Provide empathic support to carers & family and provide advice on the management of symptoms & challenging behaviours.
Identify risk factors in both the patient & family and make appropriate referrals via the multi-disciplinary team.
Awareness of local and national support groups and how to access them.
